Sometimes the path to a new idea is just as much fun as the finished result! I originally wanted to try a technique called Kintsugi, a centuries old Japenese method of repairing pottery with gold. I thought it would be fun to try to combine two pieces of sea glass together using this technique. While my finished result wasn't what I was hoping for, I did manage to get 3 unique pieces which I have yet to finish (coming soon!) ![]() Translated to “golden joinery,” Kintsugi (or Kintsukuroi, which means “golden repair”) is the centuries-old Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with a special lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Beautiful seams of gold glint in the cracks of ceramic ware, giving a unique appearance to the piece. This repair method celebrates each artifact’s unique history by emphasizing its fractures and breaks instead of hiding or disguising them. Kintsugi often makes the repaired piece even more beautiful than the original, revitalizing it with new life. ![]() To create the gold "seam" I used resin mixed with mica powder. I ordered the mica powder on Amazon and got a sample pack of 24 colors. A little goes a long way and my batch of gold resin was really, really gold! I used the extra gold resin to make this unique sea glass and resin pendant. A little light bulb went off in my head...why not see how adding a little colored mica powder to white crushed sea glass looked..........................................the answer...............................FABULOUS!!! Each necklace is made with real sea glass found on the beaches of Florida and hand crushed. A small amount of vibrant colored mica powder has been added to create these vibrant pendants. Each one is sealed in resin to preserve the sea glass forever. Pictured above is ruby red garnet, turquoise seas, and ocean blue. Absolutely gorgeous colors! Some of my favorite pieces I make come from failed attempts. I love the journey to new and exciting things. I always strive to make things unique and different which is hard to do. It seems like everything has already been done.
My hope is create a little piece of uniqueness which makes someone, somewhere smile :)
